Middle Schoolers Use Rivers of Change in Language Arts Class
September 28, 2004
Cathy Olevnik, a teacher at East Middle School in Plymouth, Michigan, had more than 100 of her Language Arts pupils generate 20 questions about the writing process for author Tom Mullen. He then answered these questions via email. The students flooded him with thank you notes. Excerpts from a small portion of these notes are below (names have been omitted). Thanks Cathy and East Middle School students!!
*
"For many years my mom has been trying to get my brother and I to write our ideas down and then go back and revise, add to, delete or correct. She said that it doesn't even matter if its in paragraph form or makes a lot of sense as long as we just write. Do you think we listened to her? No! But here you are giving almost the same advice "just write and then revise." I guess parents do know some things."
*
"Now I know several techniques to help me keep pumping out my writing, and to enjoy it even more, too! They mystery surrounding what it takes to write and research for a book has finally been answered. Again, thank you so much for inspiring me to continue writing all throughout my life!"
*
"In your research it looked like you really cared about this book. I liked it when you compared your writing with a carpenter. I can't believe that you don't have writer's block, that is impossible."
*
"Thank you for everything and I can't wait until I can be a writer as good as you. You are now my idol."
*
"We haven't read the book yet, but judging by your answers it seems you have a level head and that your book is based on solid subjects."
*
"Thank you for answering our class's questions. I really like this answer. 'You have to paddle in the direction that you want to go.' "
*
"I hope your book gives inspiration to everyone so they someday accomplish there dreams."
*
"You seem like you really have fun and enjoy your writing and that's a big inspiration. By the way I liked the quote in your book 'There's no predicting where the river of life will take us.' That's a great quote."
*
"It's really cool that you worked in water and river works so you know what your talking about unlike other authors. I also liked that you get to choose when you want to work like taking breaks and not having a boss. I'm sure you like that who wouldn't."
*
"And maybe you'll see one of my books and I'll inspire someone just like you did. Thank you!"
*
"Thank you for responding to my question. I think I actually got something out of your answers (Wow!)"
*
"It was amazing that reading books could spark an idea to travel across rivers and write about it!"
*
"From the way that you responded to our questions, it seems quite obvious that you have dedicated your entire soul to this amazing accomplishment. I really love to write and coming from previous teachers who talked and talked about things like grammar and spelling, your advice of just "letting things flow" meant a lot."
*
"Thanks for answering my questions. I hope your book will be a good seller."
*
"Thank you for writing us back. I hope you write to us some other time also, and hope you write more books. Have fun writing them."
*
"You inspired me to go out and read more books. I am glad that you wrote this stuff about your book and the writing process. You told us that brainstorming is very important, you said that when we are brainstorming we should just never stop writing."
