Book Highlights 200 Years of Change Along Lewis and Clark Route
May 5, 2003
[For Immediate Release]
If Captain Meriwether Lewis was reincarnated today, he could retrace the journey that his Lewis & Clark expedition made two centuries ago. Within days he would shake his head in confusion and surprise: what became of the rivers that his group traveled along? The answer comes alive when told by those who live and work along these waterways.
Rivers of Change is a narrative that uses interviews, anecdotes and research to highlight how the Missouri, Yellowstone and Columbia rivers have altered since Lewis and Clark traveled along them. The book weaves facets of history, science, environmental journalism and narrative together tell a riveting story of how dramatically these rivers have altered since they were dammed and channeled.
In 2001 author Tom Mullen spent five months traveling along the Missouri, Yellowstone and Columbia Rivers (driving, canoeing, rafting, even scuba diving) where he interviewed over 50 people in some way involved with the rivers that this expedition traveled on: barge pilots, wildlife biologists, Army Corps of Engineers staff and tribal historians for the Omaha, Hidatsa and Crow Indians.
What sets Rivers of Change apart from other books about Lewis and Clark is that it brings alive characters who populate these riverbanks today, unveiling an engaging web of issues they face. The chapters bring alive topics relevant to today's most controversial environmental, river management and current affairs issues. They also entertain - through dialog and stories.
The author is well qualified to have written this book. He has a Masters Degree in Water Resource Systems Management and spent a dozen years working as a consultant on five continents for water related projects. He has published articles in several magazines related to water and river issues.
The 200 page long book is well timed for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial. If you are interested in more information or a press kit, please contact the author via email.
